Outside, Out There - Coniston
Early in the season we stayed at The Black Bull for some fell walks in the snow. I concieved the idea for this painting then. With the fells rearing up all round Coniston has the feel of a real mountain village and always seems to be full of vigourous outdoor types. I tried to evoke the pleasures of returning to comfort after long days experiencing landscape, with the anticipation of further adventures on the morrow. When the painting was in progress I often thought of a patriarchal Ruskin contemplating rain over Yewdale Crags, and Donald Campbell, in blue woolly hat, somewhere in the crowd.
