Back to The Britannia-Elterwater
Oil on canvas. The Britannia is well placed at the entrance to Langdale and enjoys great popularity with walkers. Throughout the seasons there are likely to be all kinds of people enjoying the hospitality around the Inn, under the famous maple tree and in The Maple Tree Cafe. My preparation for such paintings involves several visits and on one of these I brought a step ladder and made a quick charcoal study from an elevated position which caused some good natured mirth from the gathering. Most of my characters are real persons seen on location though here in the foreground I used family and friends as models for the University field trip arriving by Land Rover.
