Pillar Rock and the Shamrock Traverse

A closer look at Pillar Rock glimpsed in the painting above (Below Pillar Cove Bridge-Ennerdale). The diminutive group of fellwalkers included for scale have travelled the High Level Route on Pillar Mountain and are now faced with the prospect of an ascent along The Shamrock Traverse seen rising diagonally over the cliff face. It is generally considered that the modern sport of rock climbing was invented and developed here and the volume of rock set 900ft up the mountainside is larger than The Great Pyramid. If this was not enough to take in, I experienced my first 'Brocken Spectre' on my first traverse.
