Langstrath Beck at Stake Pass
Oil on canvas. The footbridge over Langstrath Beck at Tray Dub leads to Stake Pass, seen here rising beside the waterfalls of Stake Beck. Mickleden and Langdale are beyond. Other painters sometimes enquire how the clear water effect is achieved. For this painting I used glazing and scumbling methods to indicate the gradually deepening water towards the bridge. Closer the river bed is clearly seen, with distance the reflection and glare from the sky become the stronger. Looking into clear water neither camera or brush can get near the visual capacity of the eye. With a little practice most can switch perception from deep water to surface reflection. The effect is elusive but compelling to express.
